Though alcohol is an indispensable part of the Vietnamese culture – rice liquor has interwined into rituals and ceremonies in the country since the ancient time, Vietnam is not known for wine, let alone Hanoi. But that doesn’t stop Hanoians from enjoying some pretty imported foreign wine.

When it comes to wine, Hanoi offers numerous places, including local cellars with extensive selections and cozy wine bars featuring curated choices. But if you’re looking for an easy-going place to sip wine by the glass on the street, followings are some of the cafe-style terraces that we have tried so far.

Travelers having wine by the glass in Hanoi

1. La Terrasse

Opened in 1901, Sofitel Metropole Hanoi Hotel is a true landmark in the French Quarter. Its French restaurant, Le Beaulieu, has been renowed for century-old classics; like the house-cured kingfish and lobster bisque or salmon come with gueridon service.

The wrap-around terrace, La Terrasse, takes the restaurant to the Hanoi street side with colonial side walk café touches. Outward facing corner sofas, French style tables, an overhead canopy, and green planter boxes offer a the best place to sip a glass of wine.

2. Tanin Wine Bars

Nested on a quiet backstreet where we often walk our guests by, Tannin Wine Bars in the Old Quarter is one of our favourite places to grab a glass of wine. To many young Hanoians and expats, Tannin is referred to as the only proper wine bar in the city.

It’s known for both of its selection and atmosphere; the range is extensive – old and new world wines. There’s a food menu to accompany the wines includes meats, charcuteries, customizable cold-cut cheese and other bites. There’s also a selection of beers and cocktails that are reasonably priced for a venue in this style.

Wines by the glass start at 200.000đ, so come for happy hour (4:00 PM -7:00 PM) with wines from 100.000đ, beer at 25.000đ, while cocktail and mixed drink start from 45.000đ.

  • Address: 46 Hang Vai Street, Hanoi.
  • Hours: 16h00 to 24h00

3. Pane e Vino

Pane e Vino is an Italian restaurant and wine shop, located a block away from the Hanoi Opera House. We understand you don’t come Vietnam and eat Italian food, but the property offers a nice colonial atmosphere and familial ambiance to savor imported fine Italian wines or Grappa.

The location offers a couple of tables with seats on the sidewalk, where it’s nice to sip a glass of wine watching the street life. Indoor areas, including the second floor, feature cozy interiors reminding European styles.

  • Address: 3 Nguyen Khac Can Street,  Hanoi.
  • Hours: 9h00 – 23h00

4. Etēsia

A boutique kitchen counter with less than 20 seats around a snug buzzy wine bar, but it boasts one of the most comprehensive wine lists in Hanoi. With up to 40 different wines being offered by the glass, this is the place to go for wine lover.

According to Etēsia, they were inspired by the refreshing “Etesian” summer winds of the Mediterranean to bring a fresh breeze to Hanoi’s culinary scene. The neatly presented, modern dishes are Mediterranean at heart with an Asian twist and deliver accurate, well-judged flavours. Don’t miss the homemade pasta: the pride and joy of Etēsia.

  • Address: 14B Lo Su Street, Hanoi.
  • Hours: 17h00 – 21:30

5. Vin Hơi

Settled in a charming house in the northern part of the Old Quarter, Vin Hoi offers intesting dishes inspired by French cuisine. Boutique but efficent, and it’s one of our favorite spots for a wine by the glass with small dishes.
