Xin chào!

Welcome to Hanoi, and thank you for visiting my website!

My name is Buffalo Joe, I go by Joe. I’ve created this site to offer private Hanoi food tours, and other foodie experiences with first-hand connections in Hanoi, that are deeply enriching for foodies and cultural travelers.

Buffalo Joe

I am 40 years old, and I came from a rice farming village on the outskirts of Hanoi, which isabout 60km (40 miles) to the south of the city center. Back to when my mum was pregnant withme for 8 months, my village was unfortunately flooded after an intense typhoon, so everyone in the village was evacuated to a temple on a nearby hill.

In a hurry, my family arranged for mum to ride on the water buffalo in stead of walking to the temple. Along their way, I was accidentally born on the back of the buffalo, and shocked everyone in the village. Hence, the name buffalo.

As a Vietnamese custom, when a baby is born, we nickname the baby after the animals or fruits around us to ward off the evil spirits. So that, when we say the nickname, the evil spirits wouldn’t know to harm or scare the baby to cry all night. That worked for me.

I grew up in the countryside with rice fields and all the farming works. Then after high school, I went to the city center for the university to become a tour guide, and I’ve been guiding for 15 years.

Currently, I’m living on the bank of the Red River on the other side of city center – where it’s not densely populated. I’m married for 8 years, and we have a twin daughter – we affectionately call them Piglet and Chicken.

As a foodie guide who love eating, I’m looking forward to meeting you in person in Hanoi. Let’s get connected directly with my WhatsApp number: +84 967 25 8586, email: hello@flavorsofhanoi.com.
